About Friends of the Fin
Friends of the Fin was created by Jasmin Spence, a lifelong lover of sharks and the ocean. I’ve always believed in a relationship with the ocean that respects its original inhabitants. Sharks are incredible creatures that have been patrolling the seas long before we ever dipped a toe in the water, and they play a crucial role in keeping marine ecosystems balanced and healthy.
With Friends of the Fin, my goal is simple: to give surfers and ocean lovers the knowledge they need to enjoy the waves safely, while also fostering respect and understanding for some of the ocean's top predators. Using real-time buoy data and historical shark attack records, this tool is designed to help you assess the current risk of shark activity and enjoy the ocean responsibly.
Why Sharks Matter
Sharks aren’t just an essential part of the ocean—they’re the apex predators that keep everything in balance. By managing fish populations and maintaining the health of marine ecosystems, sharks ensure that the ocean remains a vibrant, thriving place. Without them, the entire marine food web would be at risk. By protecting and understanding sharks, we’re not only looking out for these amazing creatures but also for the future of our oceans.
At Friends of the Fin, it’s not just about avoiding sharks—it’s about understanding and appreciating their place in the ocean we love.
